Parade will cap fire association’s annual convention in Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG — A huge fire in downtown Shippensburg more than 100 years ago led to the creation of the Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen’s Association (CVVFA), a regional organization encompassing five states that today continues to assist local firefighters with training and public education initiatives.

From July 31 to Aug. 3, Shippensburg will be the site of CVVFA’s 112th convention — 112 years to the day after that 1901 fire.

Vigilant Hose Co. is hosting the convention to mark two milestones of its own: its 170th anniversary and the one-year anniversary of moving to its new station on Walnut Bottom Road.

A parade featuring more than 40 fire companies will highlight the convention on Aug. 3 at noon. It will start at the intersection of King and Fayette streets, and proceed north on King to the intersection with Prince Street. The reviewing stand will be located in front of Vigilant’s former station at King and Prince.

Awards will be presented after the parade at Shippensburg Township Park on Britton Road.

Portions of North Fayette Street, Springhouse Road, North Seneca Street and West Burd Street will be closed that morning for the parade formation:
• North Fayette Street will be closed from Burd Street to Roxbury Road.
• All of Springhouse Road will be closed.
• North Seneca Street will be closed from Springhouse Road to West Fort Street.
• West Burd Street will be closed in the area of McCune Lumber Co. when the parade moves at noon.

Parade registration and judging will be held in the former Kmart parking lot on Walnut Bottom Road. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m.; judging, by Shamrock Judges, will run from 9-11.

In addition to the parade, the public also is invited to attend the association’s memorial service on Thursday, Aug. 1, at 11 a.m. at Memorial Lutheran Church, 34 E. Orange St.

Sandwiched between those events for CVVFA members will be training sessions, business meetings and a dinner at which officers for the coming year will be installed.

CVVFA was formed following the Boher Furniture factory fire on Aug. 3, 1901, to enhance firefighting efforts in towns along the Cumberland Valley Rail Road. Today it has more than 1,200 individual and organizational members in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Delaware, including state and local fire officials.

CVVFA focuses on firefighter training, fire prevention activities and public safety awareness, having launched its first fire prevention program in 1948. It also works to promote the safety of all emergency responders, including fire police, and facilitate cooperation among its participating state fire associations.

Three men from Shippensburg have served as CVVFA president: H.K. Baxter in 1915, Charles Webb in 1930 and Charles Myers in 1988 and 1992. The group’s convention previously was held in Shippensburg in 1915, 1930 (in honor of the 200th anniversary of the town’s founding) and 1965.

In celebration of Vigilant Hose’s 170th anniversary and move to its new station, R. Wayne Powell, executive director of the National Fire Heritage Center in Emmitsburg, Md., is encouraging fire companies across the region that share, or formerly shared, the Vigilant name to participate in the Aug. 3 parade. Each company that does so will receive a commemorative plaque from CVVFA.

For more details on the parade or other information, contact Charles Myers at 717-658-1372 or Kevin Nehf at 717-372-5477.
