SHIPPENSBURG — The nearly 7 inches of snow that fell on Shippensburg Wednesday created no major issues for the borough and surrounding townships.
Emergency Management Coordinator Tom Moriarty first said around 9 a.m. Wednesday that no big incidents had occurred, and gave the same report later in the afternoon.
He spent the morning in the Shippensburg Area Emergency Services Building in case the emergency operations center would need to open, but left around 11 a.m. when snow began tapering off.
Moriarty said the only incident he knew about in the Shippensburg area was a one-vehicle accident on Interstate 81 just north of Shippensburg in Cumberland County, but that ambulance response was not needed.
There were a few reports of power outages in the Shippensburg area, although nothing was widespread. Around 9 a.m. Penelec’s online power outage map showed 24 outages in Franklin County and less than five outages in Cumberland County; by 3 p.m. Franklin was down to less than five and Cumberland had none. Adams Electric’s power outage map showed no outages in either county in the morning or afternoon. Both electric companies serve the Shippensburg area.
Around town
Shippensburg Area School District and Shippensburg University canceled classes Wednesday.
Shippensburg Public Library also closed and canceled all programs for the day. Its phone voicemail stated that the library should be open Thursday, but that visitors should call first.
Shippensburg Borough Office remained open.
Some Shippensburg businesses maintained regular hours Wednesday even though the snow kept visitors away.
Pague and Fegan Hardware reported “lousy” business.
University Grille, ShipWreck Pub and Grill and Knute’s Pub and Grill all had regular business hours and reported business was down.
The owners of Wheel House Cafe gave all employees the day off but opened and ran the restaurant on their own, said Josiah Becker, one of three owners. He said although it was not very busy, there was enough demand to make opening worth it. The cafe closed at its regular time, 2 p.m.
