Two firefighters were injured with one of them transported to the hospital to be treated for burns, according to Shippensburg West End Fire and Rescue Deputy Fire Chief Jamie White.

Firefighters answering the 6:17 a.m. alarm found fire showing on three side of the bungalow, White said. They initiated an aggressive interior attack. Fire was in the basement, the first floor and attic.

Everybody was out except the couple’s black Labrador puppy that perished in the basement, White said.

He estimated the loss at $140,000 for the structure, excluding contents. The American Red Cross is assisting the couple.

The husband and wife were preparing for work when they smelled smoke in the basement, White said. They called the fire department and got out of the house. About 65 firefighters responded from West End, Vigilant Hose, Cumberland Valley Hose, Shippensburg EMS, Walnut Bottom, Pleasant Hall, Chambersburg and Letterkenny departments.

The fire does not appear to be suspicious in any way, White said. Investigators have yet to determine the cause and origin.
